Today Facebook rolled out a change to their comments system.
The “Submit” button is now missing, and pressing the “Enter” key no longer adds a new line, it submits the comment.
The obvious downside to this is that comments will be posted incomplete, when users are trying to add paragraphs but accidentally submit the comment. Highly frustrating…
The workaround?
To add a new line, hold down “Shift” while pressing “Enter”.
If you make a mistake (such as accidentally submitting the comment instead of adding a new line), simply click the “X” key next to your comment. This will not remove the comment, it will allow you to edit it and save it again.
Note: It seems that you can’t edit your comments once a reply has been posted. I’m not sure about the specifics of this (is there also a minimum time limit to let you edit your comment even if someone replies 2 seconds later?), but this is worth knowing.
Update: If you’re using Google Chrome, try installing this Extension, which will give you the old button back:

The new Enter key system of submitting Comments on Facebook doesn’t work for me. Maybe it’s because I have an older computer, but my comments won’t post. Very frustrating.
I don’t like it, and I wish to carry that statement beyond a mindless complaint of change. Intuitively, most people will be inclined to press enter to insert a new paragraph because virtually every form of computerized word processing has the key set up this way (including the window that I am typing this message into). It would have made more sense for the commands to follow shift+enter=submit and enter=new line.
Hey – I think you will find the post can still be removed – you need to navigate to the page you posted on and click the cross next to your comment.
Kinda inconvenient really….. but I’m not going to become one of those that moans about changes on Facebook! Embrace the change people!
What a dull world we would live in without change and ‘improvements’.
I cannot post comments with the ‘Enter’ either. I want the ‘Submit’ button back. Why fix what wasn’t broken? Good to know I’m not totally alone. Having this issue from a hospital computer. Unsure about my laptop yet. Any way to make it work, please let me know
Sometimes I am able to submit, sometimes not. Like I’ve tried to submit this one comment about a dozen times now, but every time I hit “Enter,” it starts a new line. Gah! I want “Submit” back!
When a system works perfectly like the ‘submit’ system, WHY CHANGE IT? It only confuses people, and it means they have to atune their minds to yet another new system which is TOTALLY unnecessary. More frustratingly, I personally am never sure whether the
recipient has got my message. Stupid, pointless.
